| About
my work
For a long time I have been fascinated in how we represent
the fiction of ourselves through images. Now through an interest
in creative writing I am making new work which brings image and
text together; exploring how best to present the pictures and
words so that a tension is created between them. My aim is not
to instruct the viewer of the image what to think when reading
the text, which might well limit the possibilities of meaning
in the image, but I try to create a tension which may open up
new ways of looking.
The pictures: I often use a pinhole camera made from the furniture
in my house and in these pictures I am particularly interested
in the role of scale. I also use our family snaps and 'found'
photographs like our old post card collection.
The
words: two years ago I received a grant from Southern Arts to
work with Peter Middleton - poet and creative writing teacher
at Southampton University - to explore the place of words in relation
to my visual work. I had no idea what the result would be nor
even where to start. It has been an exciting development and this
exhibition is really an experiment to see where I am now.
It
is hard to read text on screen so I have made the detective story
and a walk to the Finca into pdfs which you can print out if you
wish.
